Rethinking multicultural education: contemporary approaches and their significance for Ukraine

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to explore the reasoning for enhancing multicultural education and intercultural learning in higher education across the world as a perspective of interdisciplinary and complex approach in the tertiary education. The study is guided by the historical overview on various concepts and approaches toward multicultural education in the United States and Europe through last decades. The author has emphasized the official views on developments of intercultural learning, and how it relates to internationalization efforts of higher education institutions in regards to upbringing intercultural awareness and competences. The specifics perspectives and importance of multicultural education and its implementationin higher education in Ukraine have been emphasized. The study concludes that Ukrainian universities should consider enormous opportunities for multicultural education under conditions of war, displacement, and societal transformation, as it can be a critical instrument for strengthening social cohesion and postwar recovery.
